„Caught Between Possible Futures: Narrative Ambiguity in Speculative Climate Fiction“

Abstract:

Climate change is not only a material phenomenon but also the subject of competing cultural narratives about its causes, consequences, and possible futures. Focusing on speculative climate fiction, this talk examines how narrative ambiguity negotiates conflicting climate imaginaries, from apocalyptic visions and technological fixes to narratives of climate justice. Building on work by Erin James and Marco Caracciolo, I explore the affordances and limitations of ambiguity across different narrative dimensions, including form, ideology, space, and perspective. Drawing on a recently completed chapter on formal and ideological ambiguity, I argue that their interplay can create a space for reader-text co-production of knowledge. I also explore ideas on flooded cities in climate fiction, considering how speculative narrative spaces bring competing climate imaginaries into tension. The talk aims to open a discussion about the possibilities and limitations of narrative ambiguity in representing and negotiating socio-ecological contradictions. Attendees are warmly invited to discuss how the ideas above might be further developed in the project.
